There appears to be a problem in gmail's queues somewhere. I run my
own mailinglist server at lists.jejik.com for the gnome-hearts game
and a few other open source projects. One member
([email address]) posted a message to my mailinglist, but my
mailinglist server is receiving the message over and over again from
google. I get about one copy ever two hours. Reading over the mail
headers, it appears that the problem lies somewhere in Google, not in
my mailinglist server.
Below you will find three sets of mail headers. The first is the
original message. I posted the full headers for this message. The two
other header sets are from the last two messages I received. Fot these
I only posted the "received" lines. I received about two dozen more in
between these.
Internally in Google, it seems that mail is received by mx.google.com
who forwards it to 10.100.136.15 by SMTP. That server then relays it
to an-out-0708.google.com also through SMTP. The SMTP ID from the
relay from mx.google.com to 10.100.136.15 is always the same, but the
SMTP ID between 10.100.136.15 to an-out-0708.google.com always
changes. So it looks like that the message is stuck at 10.100.136.15
and that server continually resends it to an-out-0708.google.com.
I have checked the mailserver logs at my own mailserver and tose too
say that the problem isn't with me (It's a Debian Etch box running
Exim4, GNU mailman and SpamAssassin).
Can someone at Google please look at this?
Kind regards,
--

That appears to describe a different problem. The solution in the
thread you linked to talks about POP access to GMail accounts. I'm not
POPping. I don't even have a gmail account. I run a mailinglist
server. I'm the recipient here, not the gmail sender. The problem of
the original poster appears similar to mine, but it's not answered.
The problem is that Google delivers the message to my own mailserver
on lists.jejik.com over and over again. And everytime mailman receives
it and posts it to the mailinglist. So all my subscribers get hit with
this message over and over again.
OK, I didn't read the whole discussion I linked. But I did read about
your problem somewhere, and it was explained that sending an email
multiple times is a result of a server error on Gmail's side, so you
can just wait till they stop sending it.

No solution is offered in that thread so it wasn't very helpful.
That said, reading over the first thread you linked, they were talking
about timeout settings. I lowered the maximum amount of time that
SpamAssassin is allowed to run from 240 seconds to 220 seconds and now
the message isn't repeated anymore. My guess is that Google's SMTP
server only waits about four minutes for confirmation of delivery. If
it doesn't get it within that time, it breaks the connection and
assumes the delivery failed.
Four minutes is really a very, very short time to wait for
confirmation of delivery. With all the spam filtering, virus scanning,
sender authentication and other processes involved in e-mail these
days, you need *fast* mailserver and network connection to maintain
response times below 4 minutes. My mailserver is a Dual PII 333 Mhz
with 384 Mb of RAM. Not a great machine but it should be fast enough
to handle a couple of dozen messages per day. Apparently not...
